Hi there, I’m Aniek (pronounced “an-ique”), an English-Dutch millennial based in the Netherlands, and I’m captivated by the world of work. When I say “captivated,” I mean I can’t stop thinking about it—my feelings fluctuate from warm to cold, depending on the day. Since stepping into the 9-to-5 life, it’s been quite the adventure—one for which I feel woefully unprepared. In school, we never really discussed how to find a job you love, negotiate salaries, set work-life boundaries, navigate relationships with managers, resolve conflicts, or communicate effectively. Instead, it felt more like: here’s your diploma; you’ve proven you can pass tests—now off you go!
I realize that not everything can be learned in theory; some lessons are best discovered on the job. But can you blame me for being gobsmacked by this vast realm of “work”? I've been in it for eight years now, with another 37 to go (not that I’m counting!). I see people around me either enduring their jobs, counting down the days until they never have to see their manager again, or absolutely thriving, and I find this contrast utterly fascinating.
As for my own career path—well, I haven’t found “the one” yet (though I did meet “the other one” of my life at a less-than-glamorous student rowing club). My CV resembles a job-hopping map, and I’m not sure if that’s a problem or a badge of honor for all the insights I’ve gained about my professional interests. I’ve explored various sectors—business, government, and education—and taken on roles from event and office management to culture and project management, even serving as a professional development coach. My work journey has been filled with exhilarating opportunities and inspiring people, alongside overwhelming workloads, insufficient pay, and challenging colleagues. It’s a constant balancing act, and there’s never a dull moment.
This is why I started this blog. I love writing relatable stories and breaking the taboo surrounding what a perfect career path should look like. I can’t tell you how often I’ve thought, “Surely this isn’t what it’s supposed to be like.” Yet, the more I speak with others, the more I realize there’s no roadmap for navigating professional development and career paths. Everyone is just winging it!
So, don’t expect top-notch professional advice; I’m barely 30 and make plenty of mistakes! Instead, think of this blog as a candid sharing of my experiences and insights—like a friend recounting work-related stories over dinner or drinks. I have strong opinions about how I believe things should be, but they’re just one perspective among many. Every story has two sides, and my goal is to inspire you to reflect on your own experiences and opinions. If I can achieve that, then I consider my mission accomplished! Why? Because isn't it just way more fun navigating this crazy little thing called work together?
